VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC – 77th Anniversary

The Victory in the Pacific Committee which is made up of 10 RSL Subbranches in NSW from Brighton to Campbeltown, has organised a Commemoration Service and Street parade as held on Sunday 14th August 2022. Starting at Cabra Vale Diggers, the march moved along Railway Parade, finishing with the service in Cabra-Vale Memorial Park.

In June 2005, Cabramatta district was awarded grant from the Commonwealth Government for the provision of a permanent memorial to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Victory in the Pacific. It was suggested that a plaque be mounted on two columns or pedestals adjacent to the steps leading to the Rotunda in Cabra-Vale Memorial Park. It was agreed that a joint Commemoration Service be held on the 14th of August 2005 to commemorate the victory and unveil the plaques. The march and commemoration service proved a huge success attracting several hundred spectators. It was agreed in 2007 that the ceremony was so successful that it would become an annual event with the emphasize going to the future education of our community and school students.

We were especially honoured this year to have the Honourable Mark Coure Minister for Seniors and Multiculturalism, and representatives from around the Pacific Rim. Over 50 wreaths were laid by the community. This was the first VP Commemoration service since 2019. It was a respectful event that promoted the understanding of Australian military history the Pacific. There was a magnificent response from our secondary schools who attended on the day.

The Clubs involved are: Cabra-Vale Diggers, Smithfield RSL, St Johns Park Bowling, Campbelltown RSL, Fairfield RSL, Mounties, Ingleburn RSL, Liverpool RSL and Bankstown RSL.
