REMEMBRANCE DAY 2024
Cabra-Vale Diggers Club honoured Remembrance Day with a deeply moving ceremony on November 11, commemorating the sacrifices of Australia’s servicemen and women, particularly those lost in World War I. Held on the parapet beside the Bowling Greens, the service gathered veterans, dignitaries, club members, and the local community in a shared moment of remembrance, marking 106 years since the Armistice of 1918.
The ceremony opened with a Welcome address from the Club President Walter Robinson OAM, then Welcome to Country by Aunty Gail Smith, from the Gandangara Aboriginal Land Council, followed by a powerful address by Warrant Officer Class One Kimberly Keily from the Australian Army’s 2nd Health Brigade. WO1 Keily, who has extensive operational experience in Iraq and Malaysia, reflected on the dedication of soldiers who fought for the freedoms enjoyed today. Her words resonated with attendees, reminding all of the courage and selflessness of those who served.
Patrician Brothers College student Nathan Gerolimatos led the gathering in a reading and prayer before Cabra Vale Ex Active Servicemen’s Club President Walter Robinson OAM laid the first wreath in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, honouring Australia’s fallen. Warrant Officer Class Two Stephen Straughan then led the Last Post service, featuring the ODE, the Last Post, and a minute of silence that offered a collective moment of reflection and gratitude.
Students from Cabramatta High School presented “A Thousand Men Walking” by Joshua Dyer, while Canley Vale High School students recited the iconic poem “In Flanders Fields.” Dianne Solomon’s rendition of “Abide with Me” and the Australian National Anthem added a heartfelt musical tribute to the service.
The ceremony closed with words from Tri Vo, MP for Cabramatta and Club Patron, who urged attendees to carry forward the torch of remembrance. Guests were invited to stay for lunch, sharing memories and stories of those who have served. We thank our members and the community for their contributions on the day.
